The University of Sto. Tomas Lady Tigresses registered their second straight win after defeating the University of the East Lady Warriors, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22, in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
After losing the opening frame, UST quickly recovered and retaliated to get the succeeding sets. Angeline Poyos and Reg Jurado teamed up for the Lady Tigresses to mount a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth set, UST was trailing 5-8 until they pulled off a 5-0 run to establish a 10-8 advantage. UE did not give up without a fight as rookie Cassey Dongallo carried the Lady Warriors to within one in the crucial stretch, 23-22, but Poyos prevented a fifth set extension and pocketed their second win.
Poyos was all over the place with 19 attacks, two kill blocks, three service aces, on top of 11 excellent receptions.
Meanwhile, her fellow rookie Dongallo carried UE with 23 points of her own.
UST will face the defending champions La Salle in their next assignment.
