The Lyceum of the Philippines University continues to stay atop the standings with its winning streak in the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball tournament, after a 43-point win over the College of St. Benilde, 98-55 at the Filoil Flying V Centre..
It serves as their fifth straight victory of the Pirates and their best start in the league since joining in 2009. It was also their way of getting back from being the lone team to lose last season from the Blazers.
“We remembered the time that they beat us last year. They were 1-17, so that’s the motivation for us,” said Coach Topex Robinson.
The Pirates went on a 31-10 rally in the second quarter to make a comfortable 47-21 lead and forced the Blazers to 40 turnovers and 26 fastbreak points, which later on led to their biggest lead, 46 points.
Lyceum’s bench collected 70 points with 11-of-32 shooting from beyond the arc.
Jaycee Marcelino led the squad with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Wilson Baltazar added 16 points from a 4-of-9 shooting beyond the arc. CJ Perez once again did not disappoint the team and finished with 14 points, six rebounds, seven assists and a block.
Meanwhile, Unique Naboa led the St. Benilde Blazers with 14 points.
Lyceum leads the tournament standings with a clean 5-0 slate and will face the University of Perpetual on Friday. On the other hand, Benilde drops down the standings with a 1-3 record and will face Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Thursday at the Knights’ homecourt..
