NU grabs 4th Final Four spot in a victory over UE #UAAP77

The NU Bulldogs will be entering the UAAP Final Four for the third straight year after a 51-49 win over the UE Red Warriors.

Both teams showed their defensive prowess throughout the game that resulted to a low-scoring ball game.

The Red Warriors started the game with a 9-0 run in the opening minutes with Charles Mammie leading the way. But the Bulldogs answered back with a run of their own ending the 1st quarter with a 15-5 run.

The next quarters has been a rubber match with both teams refusing to give up a wide open lead to one another.

When the lead started to swell for the Bulldogs in the 4th quarter, Roi Sumang came to the rescue for the Red Warriors and scored 13 points in the 4th quarter alone.

The game was tied at 49-all with 37.9 seconds to go with NU getting possesion. NU big man Alfred Aroga was then fouled and sinked a pair of freethrows with 12.4 seconds left that gave them the 51-49 lead.

UE still had the chance to win the game but Bong Galanza’s three point attempt failed to hit the mark.

Glenn Khobuntin, who is playing on his final year in the UAAP, led the Bulldogs with 12 points. Forward Jeth Rosario and guard Gelo Alolino contributed with 9 and 7 points respectively.

Roi Sumang led the attack for UE with 19 points with 13 of them coming from the 4th quarter. He is followed by Bong Galanza with 9.

NU will now face the twice-to-beat Ateneo Blue Eagles in the Final Four.

NU (51) — Khobuntin 12, Rosario 9, Alolino 7, Aroga 7, Javelona 6, Betayene 4, Alejandro 3, Perez 2, Diputado 1, Celda 0, Neypes 0.

UE (49) — Sumang 19, Galanza 9, Mammie 8, Varilla 5, Javier 5, Arafat 2, Guiang 1, Alberto 0, Olayon 0, De Leon 0, Palma 0, Jumao-as 0.

Quarterscores: 15-14, 26-21, 38-31, 51-49.
