LYCEUM CONTINUES STREAK, SWEEPS MAPUA FOR 10TH STRAIGHT WIN
5 September 2017
The Lyceum Pirates is still unbeatable after sustaining their hot streak in the second round after winning against Mapua, 96-90 on Tuesday in the NCAA Season 93 men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
It was a close fight within the two teams, not until the start of the second half that the Pirates was able to take on their pace and took a comfortable lead of 73-58.
However, Lyceum lost hold of its lead in the third quarter after Laurenz Victoria and Leo Gabo took in charge of Mapua to get close with the scores late in the game and cutting the deficit to six.
Lyceum Coach Topex Robinson was dissatisfied with the Pirates’ performance as the Mapua Cardinals slowly cut their lead in the game and almost clinched the win. He hopes the first game in the second round serves as a lesson and a wake-up call for them as they face tougher teams.
“I guess we did not play our usual game and it almost backfired on us. Credit to Coach Atoy Co for preparing his team well for us,” said Robinson.
CJ Perez led the Pirates with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Jaycee Marcelino finished with 19 points, six rebounds and two assists. MJ Ayaay and Ralph Tansingco added 10 points each.
On the other hand, Leo Gabo paced Mapua Cardinals with 21 points and five assists, while Christian Bunag added a double-double record of 18 rebounds and 14 rebounds.
Lyceum will face Saint Benilde on Friday while Mapua Cardinals will try to clinch their second win against Arellano University on Tuesday.
