Converting the new team captain Arielle Estranero from libero to setter seemed to have worked as the UP Lady Maroons made quick work of the new-look Adamson Lady Falcons, 25-18, 25-11, 25-18 in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
As if losing their main setter Jewel Lai was not enough, UP also lost graduating Pia Gaiser in that match due to back injury which forced the Lady Maroons to adjust and put the sophomore Justine Dorog in the libero position.
But the Diliman-based squad, who is one of the title favorites this season, still showed dominance and swept the Lady Falcons to start their campaign of improving their last year’s fourth-place finish.
Kathy Bersola and Tots Carlos both had 11 points while Isa Molde and Nicole Tiamzon added 10 and 9 points respectively. On the other side of the net, no Lady Falcon was able to tally a double-digit score with team captain Jema Galanza only scoring 6 points.
Lady Maroons now have a 1-0 win-loss record together with Ateneo, La Salle, and NU.
