JRU fends off EAC, halts 3-game losing skid

MANILA, Philippines – Jose Rizal University survives tough competitor Emilio Aguinaldo College to claim a 69-63 win on Friday in the NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

With the win, the Heavy Bombers is back on the win column and improved to a 4-7 slate after a three-game losing skid. Meanwhile, the Generals remained at last place with a 1-10 record.

“Thankful kami na at least, nanalo kami ulit,” said head coach Louie Gonzales.

It was a close match between the two teams as they both look for that first win in over month. Luckily, Agem Miranda and Marwin Dionisio combined for a 7-2 run to give JRU a nine-point advantage, 67-58, 24 seconds left in the game.

EAC’s Jethro Mendoza and CJ Cadua answered back with a 5-0 blast, cutting down the lead to four, 63-67, but Dionisio sealed the deal for JRU with a layup as time ran out.

Miranda led the Heavy Bombers with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while Dionisio had a double-double record of 13 points and 16 rebounds. Ry Dela Rosa added 11 markers, three boards, and two assists.

For the Heavy Bombers, JP Maguliano topped with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Mendoza added 15 markers and three boards in the losing effort.
