CEBU CITY—Froilan Mangubat caught fire from the rainbow area and powered the Cebu Landmasters-University of San Carlos Warriors (USC) to a 93-68 win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in the college division of the 2019 Cesafi Partner’s Cup on Saturday, June 15, at the USC Gymnasium.
Mangubat dropped seven triples on his way to finishing with a game-high 27 points as the Warriors listed their second win in three outings. Sommy Managor gave the Jaguars more headache and finished with 23 markers.
Miguel Gastador tallied 22 points and Elmer Echavez contributed 15 for the slumping Jaguars, who absorbed their second loss in as many games.
Meanwhile, the Southwestern University (SWU) -Phinma Cobras nipped the Tough Gear-Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 75-62, to earn a piece of the top spot.
The Wildcats seized control behind a 15-1 attack that turned a slim 55-51 lead into a commanding 70-52 cushion in the final two-minute zone of the contest.
The win allowed the Cobras to tie the idle University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters at the number one spot with a clean 2-0 (win-loss) records.
SWU reinforcement Lamine Thiam paced the Cobras with 19 points, nine of them came in the pivotal run.
Jemcerson Sable scored 11 points, John Jabonete pitched in 10 in the Wildcats’ third loss in as many outings.
In the high school division, the Hotel Fortuna-UC Baby Webmasters nailed a second straight win by clamping the Cebu Elite-USC Baby Warriors, 78-67.
Mac-Z Micutuan topped the Baby Webmasters with 15 points, while Kenyon Pondoc chipped in 12.
In the other high school match, the OCCCI-CIT-U Wildkittens netted a tight 76-70 victory over the Tough Gear-SWU-Phinma Baby Cobras.
Sol Jade Tirol led CIT-U with 20 points and was backed by Darryl Versales, who banged in 18.
Charles Libatog topped the Baby Cobras with 20 and Dezeo Villanueva had 16.
