Gilas Pilipinas rode on a strong third quarter kick to blast host team Jordan, 74-66, in the fifth window of the Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers early Friday morning (Philippine time) at the Prince Hamza Hall in Amman.
Towering center Kai Sotto topscored for Gilas with 16 points while also tallying seven rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.
It was a solid 23 minutes of action for the 7-foot-center but it was the duo of Scottie Thompson and CJ Perez who made a huge impact as Gilas improved to 4-3 (win-loss) in Group E.
The high-leaping Thompson flirted with triple-double with eight points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and a steal.
Perez was brilliant in his return to the national team after he netted 11 points, five assists, three boards and a steal.
The other Gilas player to score in twin digits was Ray Parks Jr., who finished with 13 points.
Gilas jumped off to a good start and had a 21-20 lead after the first quarter.
Jordan, however, found its bearing in the second quarter and built a 41-37 lead at the half.
It was in the third that the Filipinos made a bold move, shackling the home team with its suffocating defense and relying on Sotto, Perez, Parks and Thompson for the needed production.
Gilas ended the third with a 58-51 edge and would build double-digit cushion in the fourth en route to dealing Jordan its first home loss since 2018.
Gilas will see action again on Monday, Nov. 16, against Saudi Arabia at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.
With NBA star Jordan Clarkson in tow, Gilas dominated Saudi, 84-46, in their August 29 duel at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
