FEU eliminates Ateneo, solidifies hold of third spot

By Ardyn Gonzales

The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws ended the semis hopes of the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in a four-set victory, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 25-13, in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament, Wednesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

FEU remains at third spot and is in a good position to challenge the second seed La Salle for the twice-to-beat advantage.

Tied 1-1 in the match, the Lady Tamaraws narrowly escaped Ateneo in a tight third set as an emphatic kill block of Faida Bakanke on Lyann De Guzman created a two-point, 23-21 lead for FEU. The Blue Eagles scored another point but Bakanke scored consecutive points to seal the third set.

It was all FEU in the fourth set, with Bakanke, Chenie Tagaod, and Gerz Petallo conniving to quickly build a 16-9 cushion, which they eventually one after a 9-4 lopsided run.

Bakanke was once again the top scorer for the Lady Tamaraws with 19 points, while the other wingers in Petallo and Tagaod added 13 and 12, respectively.

Meanwhile, AC Miner continued to perform excellently in her new position, tallying 17 points to lead the Blue Eagles. This loss ended their Final Four hopes this season, missing their third consecutive semi finals appearance.
