The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws are on a roll after sweeping the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 25-13, 25-21, 25-16, in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament, Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
UP was not able to capitalize on their huge reverse-sweep win against the defending champions in their last game as they succumbed to FEU with a double-digit deficit in the opening set.
The Fighting Maroons managed to keep the score closer in the second set, but the Lady Tamaraws’ offense and defense were on point, allowing them to sustain their firepower until the third set where they led UP by as much as nine points.
With a 22-16 advantage in the third, FEU’s Clarisse Loresco and Gerz Petallo connived to deliver the finishing touches for the Lady Tamaraws’ third straight win this season.
Alyssa Devosora continued to impress with another excellent performance, emerging as the top scorer for FEU with 15 points on 13 attacks and two service aces. Petallo had 12, while Loresco produced 11 markers, including the team-high four kill blocks.
Meanwhile, the Fighting Maroons squad who beat NU was nowhere to be found as no one scored in double-digits. Joan Monares was the top scorer with eight points, while Nina Ytang was limited to just six. Ace player Casiey Dongallo contributed four points before she suffered a knee injury after a bad landing in the first set.
FEU (4-2) will attempt to end the first round of eliminations on a high note against UST (2-3), while UP (3-2) will also hope to bounce back against the Golden Tigresses.
