After a devastating loss to La Salle last Sunday, the Far Eastern University bounced back and claimed their first win at the expense of University of the East, 90-83 on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball tournament at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Tamaraws was off to a hot start as they led by 19 points, 30-11, early in the second quarter and continued to take control of the match until the final period.
Rey Acuno and Clark Derige led the Red Warriors for a comeback late in the final frame, as they cut the deficit to seven, 73-80. However, thanks to Ron Dennison’s consecutive points and Alvin Pasaol’s ejection from the game, FEU was boosted to drive back to their momentum and finish the match.
FEU Coach Olsen Racela, who took over from his brother Coach Nash Racela, seemed happier on their performance than what the Tamaraws showed against La Salle.
“Our performance today was much better than the game against La Salle as we were able to make it big from the start,” said Racela. “It always gives you the satisfaction when you win, especially since this is our first win in the season and my first win in the UAAP.”
Dennison led the Tamaraws with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals, while Prince Orizu finished with a double-double record of 15 points and 16 rebounds. Richard Escoto, Barkley Ebona and Arvin Tolentino had 11 points each for the win.
On the other hand, Derige finished with a game-high 22 points and Pasaol took 13 points before fouling out from the game.
