Chiang Kai Shek Tame NU Bullpups; Red Cubs Win Over UPIS in 3rd PSSBC

Chiang Kai Shek College proved steadier down the stretch as they clobbered UAAP Juniors champions National University in double-overtime, 73-71, at the opening day of the 3rd Ironcon Builders Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship on Saturday at the Chang Kai Shek College Gym in Tondo, Manila.
Celebrating their 75th anniversary year, the Blue Dragons did not disappoint their fans who trooped their gymnasium to watch the opening day festivities of the tournament.
JV Gallego paced CKSC with 29 points while Fran Yu scored 9 points, including the marginal basket off a feed from Rafael Toribio. The win also enabled the Blue Dragons to clinch a quarterfinals seat in a tournament participated by 12 top high school teams in the UAAP, NCAA, and Tiong Lian.
Meanwhile, PBA chairman Pato Gregorio, who represented Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan, lauded the efforts of the PSSBC board of governors, saying the tournament is “the grassroots of the highest order.” Aside from Gregorio, also gracing the opening rites were Gilas coach Chot Reyes, Butch Antonio and Ranidel de Ocampo who received the P1 million bonus promised by Hapee’s Dr. Cecilio Pedro, Blackwater-Ever Bilena’s Dioceldo Sy and Freego’s Eduard Tio. Officials from UAAP, NCAA and Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball League, led by Dr. Dory Poa also graced the occasion.
In the other games, FEU-FERN dominated St. Stephen High Scool, 98-55, while recently crowned NCAA juniors champions San Beda Red Cubs defeated UPIS, 79-63. Xavier Golden Stallions capped the opening day games with a win over the University of the East, 78-60, led by the 28 points of Tyler Tio.
