Cash-rich Cebu Governor’s Cup U-21 caging gets underway

CEBU CITY—The third installment of the Cebu Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities and Municipalities Under 21 Developmental Basketball Tournament, one of the country’s biggest grassroots basketball competition, is underway.

Held in eight venues around Cebu province, a total of 17 games marked the start of the cash-rich tournament last Saturday, March 9.

Leading the winner’s circle were the defending champions Talisay City Aquastars, who pulled off a 96-69 blowing out of the Sibonga Pillars at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

The Aquastars are now 15-0 dating back to last season where they went on a 14-0 tear en route to copping the championship crown.

Also winning were the Minglanilla Archangels, who nipped the San Fernando Spartans, 73-69, and the Naga City Electrifiers, who downed the Carcar City Lechoneros, 77-61.

Argao survived Oslob, 63-59, Samboan nosed out Boljoon, 79-78, while Alcoy trampled Santander, 86-60, in a triple-header at the Oslob Municipal Gym.

Over at the Dumanjug Municipal Gym, Dumanjug blasted Alcantara, 89-53, while Moalboal thwarted Ronda, 78-71.

In a separate triple-header at the Bogo City Coliseum, Bogo whipped the Santa Fe Seafarers, 88-62, Tabogon beat Tabuelan, 79-72, while Medellin prevailed over San Remigio, 76-66.

Two games were also held at the Danao City Sports and Civic Center with San Francisco nipping Poro, 91-62, and Danao ripping Tudela apart 119-62.

Over at the Catmon Municipal Gym, Sogod went through the wringer before eding Catmon, 74-73, while Carmen scored its own close win against Borbon, 87-85.

Balamban, on the other hand, shocked Tuburan, 97-96, at the Tuburan Municipal Gym, while the Consolacion Sarok Weavers frustrated Cordova, 85-78, at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

Spearheaded by Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) headed by its executive director Atty. Ramil Abing, this year’s tournament has 41 participating teams representing their respective local government unit.

“This is our way of helping the development of the grassroots basketball program in the province,” said Abing.

“This is part of our grassroots program, and we’re hoping that we could sustain it every year,” said CPSC Executive Director Atty. Ramil P. Abing.

Teams belonging to their congressional districts will play in a single round robin with the top two fighting for the district championship crown.

Congressional districts with only three teams will adapt a double round robin format.

The number one and two teams in each congressional district will get P100,000 and P50,000, respectively and will to the quarterfinals.

A whopping P500,000 cash prize awaits the overall champion, while the second to fourth placers will get P300,000, P200,000, and P100,000, respectively.

Top individual performers will also receive cash prizes with the Most Valuable Player pocketing P10,000, while embers of the Mythical Five will each receive claim P5,000.
