CEBU CITY—Carcar City caught a big fish on Sunday night, March 24, when it nosed out the defending champions Talisay Aquastars, 85-84, in their First District duel of the 2019 Governor’s Cup Under-21 Inter-Cities and Municipalities Basketball Tournament at the Minglanilla Municipal Gym.
The hairline victory upped Carcar City’s win-loss record to 3-2, while Talisay saw its long win streak come to an end.
It was only Talisay’s first loss dating back to last season that saw them complete a 15-0 run en route to copping the crown.
For this season, Talisay started the tournament with three straight wins but was finally stopped on its tracks not thanks to Carcar’s top gun Ronald Delfino.
Delfino exploded for 28 points to top Carcar, while Rey Joseph Alfeche, Dilcer Gaviola and Dave Abella pitched in 14, 11 and 10, respectively.
Keaton Taburnal paced Talisay with 14 markers and Jay Deiparine had 17.
The Minglanilla Archangels, on the other hand, didn’t disappoint their rabid supporters after they nipped the Naga City Electrifiers, 93-82.
Alvier Alforque fired 22 points, Ryzel Gilbuena donated 14, Mark Nebril had 11 for Minglanilla, which evened its record to 2-2.
Naga tasted its second defeat in five games.
In the Fourth District, Madridejos stretched its unbeaten start to four via a 110-61 crushing of Sta. Fe (0-3), while Bogo improved to 3-1 with a 68-60 win over Tabogon (2-2), 68-60.
Tabuelan, for its part, pocketed its second win in four games with a close 84-81 win over Medellin (2-1), 84-81.
