The Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles officially entered the Final Four as they outlasted the National University in a four-set battle, 25-14, 24-26, 25-17, 25-19, in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament, Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
After a convincing first set win, the Lady Eagles struggled with their offense and unforced errors that paved the way for the NU to take advantage in the second frame.
The Lady Bulldogs erased the 18-14 lead of Ateneo with Cess Robles and Ivy Lacsina bombarding the Lady Eagles with strong serves and attacks. Ateneo was able to recover to reach set point, but NU started a clutch 3-0 run to steal the set concluded by a service of Joni Chavez and an attack by Lacsina.
Ateneo faced another resistance from the Lady Bulldogs in the succeeding sets but they prevailed over NU as they completed their ten-game winning streak, which secured them of a spot in the Final Four.
It was a well-balanced offense for Ateneo as all their five attackers were in double-digits, led by Jules Samonte who registered her season-high 13 points on top of 19 excellent digs, while Kat Tolentino and Maddie Madayag combined for 25 markers.
The duo of Ivy Lacsina and Cess Robles carried NU with 13 points apiece, while Jennifer Nierva once again showcased her prowess in defense with 26 excellent digs and 30 excellent receptions.
