Arellano University grabbed their first win in the NCAA Season 100 Men’s Basketball Tournament by beating San Sebastian, 87-73, at the FilOil-EcoOil Centre in San Juan, Sunday.
The Chiefs relied on their bench to end their four-game winless streak, as point guard Jeadan Ongotan powered them through to avoid their worst start.
A 10-0 run to finish the first quarter gave the Chiefs enough breathing room at 32-20. Ongotan’s technical free throw early in the fourth quarter gave the Sampaloc-based squad its biggest lead at 77-60.
A native of Sorsogon, Ongotan led all scorers with 21 points, in which he hit 5/9 in field goals and shot 11/13 from the stripe for an efficient performance.
Center JL Capulong and forward Cyril Hernal added 12 and 11 markers, with the former pulling down ten rebounds for a double-double. The frontcourt duo eventually launched a block party after they combined for five swats in the game.
Overall, the trio was key to Arellano outscoring Baste in bench points, 64-36, which was instrumental to their dominant win.
Guard Nikko Aguilar had 14 while coming off the bench for San Sebastian, which lost its third game in a row.
