Since Arellano joined the league in 2009, they only made their debut in the Final Four this year and made sure they make the most out of it.
The Chiefs entered the finals by beating JRU, 72-65, in the other Final Four match at the Season 90 NCAA basketball tournament on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
Arellano led almost the entire match before JRU was able to grab momentarily the lead 63-62 behind the efforts of hot-shooting Jaycee Asuncion in the final quarter. But a 10-2 run, highlighted by a Keith Agovida slam sealed the win for the Chiefs.
Arellano head coach Jerry Codinera is pleased with the achievement of his players and the whole Arellano community. Incidentally, it is also the first finals appearance in his coaching career. “It’s a dream come true for all of us. We’re in an unusual territory especially for me as a coach” says Codinera.
American Dioncee Holts led the Chiefs with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Levi Hernandez scored 12. Jiovani Jalalon had an all-around game with 8 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals.
The Heavy Bombers were led by Tey Teodoro with 19 points while Jaycee Asuncion and Michael Mabulac scored 13 a piece. JRU top gunner Philip Paniamogan bid his college basketball career goodbye with a miserable 3 points on 1-7 shooting.
