THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas strives to reclaim the UAAP Season 79 overall title after losing it last year from the De La Salle University with two points. The Tigers double their efforts from a 12-point lead in the first semester to a comfortable 45-point lead.
UST ruled in the first semester of the tournament after they garnered a total of 161 points. They nabbed six gold medals and three silver, which placed them ahead from DLSU, who follows behind with 149 points.
The Espana-based team prepared well for the season and made back-to-back championship titles from beach volleyball and judo. UST men’s taekwondo grabbed a gold while the women’s team settled for silver. The UST poomsae team nabbed another silver after La Salle dethroned them, while UST men’s table tennis team had another gold while the women’s team had silver.
DLSU on the other hand had three gold medals, three silver and four bronze in the first semester. They claimed championship titles in men’s basketball, poomsae taekwondo and women’s table tennis. They settled as a runner up in women’s basketball, men’s table tennis, and men’s swimming competitions.
Coming into the second semester of the tournament, UST continues to pull away from DLSU after nabbing another gold from the women’s track and field, six silver medals from tennis, baseball, softball, men’s fencing and men’s track and field competition, while the women’s fencing team had the bronze medal.
La Salle on the other hand keeps up their pace, adding three bronze medals to their collection from the men’s track and field, men’s tennis and baseball.
With only four events remaining, UST leads the general championship title, 258 points, with only six events remaining. DLSU comes second with 213 points, while University of the Philippines follows with 181 points (2 gold from women’s swimming and women’s badminton and 8 bronze medals from men’s beach volleyball, swimming, badminton, fencing and women’s tennis, track and field and judo.
UAAP awards 15 points to champions, 12 to the second place and 10 points to the third.
