Despite losing three of their main starters to graduation, the defending champion De La Salle Lady Spikers were able to escape the complete and intact lineup of the Far Eastern University, 29-27, 25-22, 25-23, to close the opening weekend of the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.

Although it was a straight-set win, the Lady Tamaraws led by Bernadette Pons made sure that La Salle would not claim each set easily.

After being down 20-13 in the first set, the also-title favorite FEU trimmed down the lead to a single point and almost claimed the set after getting three set points. But a timely service ace from Baron rejected the attempt comeback to get them ahead, 1-0.

It was obvious in the second and third set that La Salle heavily missed the services of outside spikers Galang and Demecillo as Tiamzon and Cheng struggled scoring only two and three points respectively but the Lady Spikers still managed to prevail.

Player of the Game: Majoy Baron, 15 points (9 attacks, 3 blocks, 3 service aces)
