UST takes down FEU with convincing sweep

By Ardyn Gonzales

The University of Sto. Tomas Golden Tigresses ended the first round of UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on a high note after sweeping the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20, Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

After decisively winning the first two sets, UST faced a comeback attempt from the Lady Tamaraws who built a 14-12 lead.

However, the advantage was short-lived as the Golden Tigresses quickly responded with a 5-1 run powered by the duo of Angge Poyos and Reg Jurado.

A service run from the rookie Avril Bron further widened the lead of UST en route to their fourth win of the season.

Poyos led all scorers with 16 points, while Jurado and Jonna Perdido added 10 and nine points, respectively. The rookie tandem of Bron and Lianne Penuliar also made wonders for UST, finishing with combined 13 markers.

Following a 0-2 start this season, UST is now at third place with a 4-3 standing, tied with FEU and whichever team wins in the crucial match up between Adamson and UP.

Meanwhile, Jaz Ellarina carried the scoring load for FEU with 10 points. Gerz Petallo also delivered with nine points but she suffered a shoulder injury after an awkward collision with the libero.
