The De La Salle University Lady Spikers are off to a good start after getting an early crucial win against their rivals University of Sto. Tomas Golden Tigresses in straight sets, 25-14, 25-15, 26-24, in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament, Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
La Salle’s offense and defense were on point, bombarding UST with heavy serves that disrupted the Golden Tigresses’ floor defense and shutting down their attacking lanes at the net.
The Lady Spikers made quick work of UST in the first two sets, maintaining a double-digit lead to quickly build a 2-0 advantage.
In the third set, however, the Golden Tigresses showed signs of life as they threatened to extend the match after reaching set point 24-22. However, Shevana Laput and Angel Canino knew better and displayed composure as they sparked a 4-0 run to prevent the extension and complete the sweep.
Laput once again led all scorers with 22 points on 17 attacks, four kill blocks, and a service ace. Canino added 13, while Shane Reterta and Amie Provido combined for 14 markers.
Meanwhile, Angge Poyos was the lone bright spot for UST with 16 points.
La Salle (2-0) will hope to maintain their early lead as they face UP (2-0) in their next match. UST (0-2), on the other hand, will aim to end their losing streak against Ateneo (0-2).
