The University of Sto. Tomas Golden Tigresses are still on a roll after clinching their fourth straight victory, defeating the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 25-11, 25-22, 23-25, 25-12, in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament, Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
After winning the first two sets convincingly, the Golden Tigresses saw themselves down in the third, 11-18, before making a huge run to trim down the lead to a single point, 23-24. Unfortunately, an off-the-block hit from UP denied them their first straight-set win this season.
UST quickly recovered in the fourth and zoomed to a 14-4 start for a ten-point advantage. Angge Poyos and Reg Jurado made sure to keep hold of the massive lead and carried the Golden Tigresses for their fourth win this season. Poyos unleashed a strong crosscourt attack in Zone 6 to seal the victory for UST.
Jurado led all scorers with 22 points, while Poyos also reached the 20-point mark with 21 markers of her own. Detdet Pepito carried the defense load with a double-double, dishing out 22 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions.
Meanwhile, rookie Kianne Olango was productive despite the loss, tallying 18 points to lead the Fighting Maroons. After an impressive 2-0 start this season, UP suffered their third straight loss.
