MANILA, Philippines – San Sebastian College-Recoletos survived Lyceum of the Philippines University, 73-71, in the NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
“First of, glory to God. Pangit ‘yung start namin, but the boys showed character,” said San Sebastian head coach Egay Macaraya post-game. “Malaking bagay ito sa amin dahil we are fighting for our lives.”
With the win, Baste improved to a 9-6 win-loss record. This also made sure that the second seed remains up for grabs, because a Lyceum win would have locked that down, along with its twice-to-beat advantage.
The Golden Stags were 19 points down, but they managed to cut it down coming into the fourth quarter.
Tied at 71-all in the final minutes of the game, Allyn Bulanadi made a no-look pass to rookie Rommel Calahat, who knocked down an inside basket, 21.6 ticks left.
The Pirates still had the chance to tie the game, but JM Calma forced Reymar Caduyac to lose the ball as time ran out.
Bulanadi led San Sebastian with 28 points, seven rebounds, and two assists, while RK Ilagan had 11 markers.
On the other hand, Jaycee Marcelino paced LPU with 21 points and six rebounds, while Mike Nzusseu added a 16-marker, 12-board double-double as they fell to a 12-4 slate.
