CEBU CITY—The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers reasserted their mastery over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars as they prevailed in a rematch of last year’s title duel, 76-56, on Tuesday night, September 24, in the college division of the 2019 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The easy win shoved the defending champions Green Lancers to solo second place with three wins and one loss, while the Jaguars remained mired at the lower part of the standings after falling to 1-3 (win-loss).
UV was quick to break the game wide open as it dropped nine triples in the first two quarters of play to post a 42-29 lead at the half.
USJ-R put up a semblance of fight when it moved within 41-46 but a 12-4 run by UV gave them another double-digit cushion, 58-45.
The match was never close after that with UV even erecting leads as big as 22 points.
Ted Saga spearheaded the Green Lancers with 14 points and six rebounds, while Monic Soliva added 12 points.
Gileant Delator had stellar all-around game for UV as he finished with eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Renz Solomon paced USJ-R with 12 points.
It was a double whammy for USJ-R as the Baby Jaguars bowed to the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters, 51-73, in the day’s other match.
UC remained unbeaten at 4-0, while USJ-R continued to sputter as it stayed winless after three games.
